Digestive issues and IBS are among the most common reasons people seek acupuncture, and among the conditions where a whole-body approach can be especially helpful. Why Digestive Issues & IBS Are So Hard to Treat

Digestive symptoms can come from many different factors at once: stress, diet, nervous system sensitivity, irregular motility, inflammation, hormonal shifts, and more. IBS in particular often involves symptoms that flare and fade, which can make it feel unpredictable and frustrating.
At Sinew Center, we take time to understand your full digestive picture — what your symptoms feel like, when they started, what makes them better or worse, and how they connect to stress, sleep, and daily routines. That fuller picture helps us create a treatment plan that is practical and individualized.

Conditions We Treat

Acupuncture at Sinew Center is used for a wide range of digestive concerns, including:

-Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Bloating and gas
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Alternating bowel habits
- Abdominal pain or cramping
- Reflux and indigestion
- Stress-related digestive symptoms
- Digestive upset that worsens with anxiety or nervous system stress

How Does Acupuncture Help Digestive Issues & IBS?

Acupuncture is used to help calm the nervous system and support more balanced digestive function. Here’s how it may help:
Calms Stress-Related Gut Flare-Ups
Stress and digestion are closely connected. Acupuncture may help reduce the “fight-or-flight” response that can make IBS and other digestive symptoms worse.
Supports More Comfortable Digestion
Many patients seek acupuncture for bloating, cramping, or a sense that their digestion is “off.” Treatment may help reduce that tension and support a steadier digestive pattern.
Helps Regulate the Gut-Brain Connection
The gut and nervous system constantly communicate with each other. Acupuncture may help support that connection so your body is less likely to stay stuck in a flare-up pattern.
Promotes Relaxation and Better Circulation
By helping the body shift into a more relaxed state, acupuncture may support circulation, ease abdominal tension, and improve overall comfort.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Your first appointment at Sinew Center begins with a detailed conversation about your symptoms — including bloating, bowel habits, pain, reflux, food triggers, stress, sleep, and any patterns you’ve noticed over time. We also look at your broader health picture because digestion is connected to the whole body, not just the stomach or intestines.
Your first treatment will be tailored to what we learn in that conversation. Most patients leave their first visit feeling heard, supported, and clearer about the next steps.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

For new or occasional digestive symptoms, some people notice changes within a few sessions. For chronic IBS or long-standing digestive issues, we typically recommend one treatment per week for 6–8 weeks, followed by a reassessment.
Many patients do best with a series of treatments first, then less frequent maintenance visits once symptoms are more stable.

Is Acupuncture for Digestive Issues & IBS Covered by Insurance?

We are currently in-network with UHC and VA Community Care. We anticipate credentialing with Medica in the fall of 2026 and Aetna and Cigna in the coming months. If you have out-of-network acupuncture benefits, we are happy to provide a superbill for reimbursement. We also accept HSA and FSA cards.
