Why Back & Neck Pain Is So Hard to Treat

Back and neck pain are notoriously complex. Pain can stem from muscle tension, joint inflammation, nerve compression, postural imbalances, stress, or a combination of all of the above. Conventional treatment often focuses on a single cause — anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxants, or surgery — without addressing the full picture.
At Sinew Center, we take the time to understand your pain fully — when it started, what makes it better or worse, how it affects your daily life, and what patterns in your body may be contributing to it. This is what allows us to create a treatment plan that actually works.

Conditions We Treat

Acupuncture at Sinew Center is effective for a wide range of back and neck pain conditions, including:
– Acute and chronic low back pain

– Upper back and shoulder tension

– Neck pain and stiffness

– Herniated or bulging discs

– Sciatica and radiating leg pain

– Cervical radiculopathy and radiating arm pain

– Muscle spasms and trigger points

– Post-surgical pain and recovery

– Pain from sports injuries or overuse

– Tension and stress related muscle tightness

– Osteoarthritis of the spine

How Does Acupuncture Help Back & Neck Pain?

Acupuncture is one of the most well-researched complementary therapies for musculoskeletal pain. Here's how it works:
Reduces Inflammation
Acupuncture stimulates the body's natural anti-inflammatory response, reducing swelling and irritation in affected joints, muscles, and connective tissue.
Releases Muscle Tension
Acupuncture needles placed directly into trigger points and areas of tension signal the nervous system to release the muscle — often providing immediate relief from tightness and spasm.
Activates Natural Pain Relief
Acupuncture stimulates the release of endorphins and other naturally-produced pain-relieving compounds, reducing pain perception without the side effects of medication.
Regulates the Nervous System
Chronic pain rewires the nervous system over time, making pain signals louder and harder to quiet. Acupuncture interrupts this cycle by regulating the autonomic nervous system and calming the brain's pain processing pathways.
Promotes Circulation & Healing
Increased blood flow to injured or tense tissue accelerates healing, reduces stiffness, and restores normal range of motion.

Acupuncture + Cupping for Back & Neck Pain

At Sinew Center, we frequently combine acupuncture with cupping therapy for back and neck pain — particularly for patients with significant muscle tension, restricted mobility, or chronic tightness. Cupping lifts and separates the soft tissue layers, releasing adhesions and increasing circulation in a way that complements acupuncture beautifully.
Many patients find that the combination of both therapies in a single session provides deeper, longer-lasting relief than either treatment alone.

What Does the Research Say?

Back and neck pain are among the most studied conditions in acupuncture research. Major findings include:
– The American College of Physicians recommends acupuncture as a first-line treatment for chronic low back pain

– Multiple large-scale studies show acupuncture significantly outperforms sham acupuncture and conventional care for chronic back and neck pain

– Acupuncture has been shown to provide lasting pain relief, not just temporary symptom management

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Your first appointment at Sinew Center begins with an in-depth conversation about your pain — its location, quality, history, and how it affects your daily life. We'll also discuss your overall health, stress levels, sleep, and digestion, because at Sinew Center we treat the whole person, not just the painful area.
Your first treatment will be tailored specifically to what we learn in that conversation. Most patients leave their first session feeling noticeably lighter, looser, and more at ease.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

For acute pain, a recent injury or sudden onset, you may experience significant relief within 6-8 sessions. For chronic pain that has been present for months or years, we typically recommend one treatment per week for 6-8  weeks, followed by a reassessment.
Many patients transition to treatments once every two weeks then monthly maintenance treatments once their pain is well managed, keeping symptoms at bay and preventing flare-ups before they start.

Is Acupuncture for Back & Neck Pain Covered by Insurance?

Most insurance companies cover back and neck pain, but it's always good to check with your insurance company before coming into the clinic.
We are currently in-network with UHC and VA Community Care. We anticipate credentialing with Medica, starting July 2026 and Aetna and Cigna in the coming months. If you have out-of-network acupuncture benefits, we are happy to provide a superbill for reimbursement. We also accept HSA and FSA cards.
