You Are Not Just "Stressed Out"

In our culture, stress is often minimized, treated as something to push through rather than something to treat. But chronic stress and anxiety have real, measurable effects on the body: elevated cortisol, disrupted sleep, digestive issues, muscle tension, hormonal imbalances, and a nervous system that never fully switches off.

At Sinew Center, we take your stress and anxiety seriously. We see it not as a character flaw or a weakness, but as a signal from your body that something needs attention, and we are here to help you respond to that signal with care.

Symptoms We Treat

Acupuncture at Sinew Center is effective for a wide range of anxiety and stress-related symptoms, including:

– Physical tension, jaw clenching, tight shoulders, headaches

– Heart palpitations

– Shallow breathing and chest tightness

How Does Acupuncture Help Anxiety & Stress?

Acupuncture works on anxiety and stress through several well-researched pathways:

Calms the Nervous System
Acupuncture directly activates the parasympathetic nervous system, the body's "rest and digest" state, pulling you out of the chronic fight-or-flight response that drives anxiety. Many patients feel a profound sense of calm during and immediately after treatment.

Reduces Cortisol
Research shows that acupuncture significantly reduces cortisol, the body's primary stress hormone, helping to break the cycle of chronic stress and its downstream effects on sleep, digestion, hormones, and immunity.

Supports Serotonin & Endorphin Production
Acupuncture stimulates the release of serotonin, endorphins, and other mood-regulating neurochemicals, producing a natural sense of calm, wellbeing, and emotional resilience.

Regulates the HPA Axis
The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis governs the body's stress response. Acupuncture helps regulate this system, reducing the hair-trigger reactivity that characterizes chronic anxiety.

Addresses Physical Manifestations of Stress
Jaw tension, tight shoulders, headaches, digestive upset, acupuncture treats the physical places your body holds stress, releasing tension and restoring ease to the tissues that have been carrying it.

Anxiety, Stress & the Connection to Other Symptoms

At Sinew Center, we frequently see anxiety and stress showing up alongside, and contributing to, other health concerns:

Insomnia a racing mind at bedtime is one of the most common presentations of anxiety

Digestive issues the gut-brain connection means stress almost always shows up in the digestive system

Hormonal imbalances chronic stress disrupts the entire hormonal cascade, affecting menstrual cycles, perimenopause symptoms, and libido

Chronic pain the nervous system amplifies pain signals when it is under stress
This is one of the great strengths of Traditional Chinese Medicine: we can address anxiety and its downstream effects in a single treatment, rather than treating each symptom separately.

Acupuncture & Mental Health — An Integrative Approach

Acupuncture is not a replacement for therapy, medication, or psychiatric care and we would never suggest it should be. What it offers is a powerful complement to whatever else you are doing for your mental health.

Many of our patients come to Sinew Center already working with a therapist or psychiatrist. They find that acupuncture helps them get more out of their therapy sessions, manage the physical symptoms of anxiety more effectively, and feel more grounded and present in their daily lives.

If you are not currently working with a mental health provider but feel you might benefit from one, we are happy to support you in finding the right resources.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Your first appointment begins with an in-depth conversation about your experience of stress and anxiety, when it started, how it shows up in your body, what makes it better or worse, and how it is affecting your daily life. We'll also discuss your sleep, digestion, energy, and overall health, because at Sinew Center we treat the whole person.

Most patients leave their first acupuncture session feeling noticeably calmer, lighter, and more at ease. Many fall asleep on the table. The effects continue to build with each subsequent treatment.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Anxiety and stress respond very well to a consistent course of acupuncture. Most patients begin to notice meaningful shifts within 3–5 sessions. We typically recommend one treatment per week for 6–8 weeks, followed by a reassessment.

Many patients choose to continue with regular maintenance treatments, every 2–4 weeks, to sustain their results and stay ahead of stress before it accumulates. Think of it as regular maintenance for your nervous system.

Is Acupuncture for Anxiety Covered by Insurance?

Most insurance companies cover generalized anxiety, but it's always good to check with your insurance company before coming into the clinic.

We are currently in-network with UHC and VA Community Care. We anticipate credentialing with Medica, starting July 2026 and Aetna and Cigna in the coming months. If you have out-of-network acupuncture benefits, we are happy to provide a superbill for reimbursement. We also accept HSA and FSA cards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can acupuncture help with panic attacks?
Yes. Many patients find that regular acupuncture significantly reduces both the frequency and intensity of panic attacks over time by calming the nervous system at a foundational level.

Can I do acupuncture while taking anti-anxiety medication?
Absolutely. Acupuncture has no known interactions with anti-anxiety medications and can be a safe and effective complement to pharmaceutical treatment.

What if I am nervous about trying acupuncture?
That is completely understandable and very common! We move at your pace entirely. Many of our most anxious patients become our biggest advocates once they experience how deeply relaxing acupuncture can be.

Can acupuncture help with stress-related insomnia?
Yes, in fact, anxiety and insomnia are so closely linked that we almost always treat them together. See our dedicated page on Acupuncture for Insomnia & Sleep for more information.
